    Case Study

The Client:
Merchants Insurance, headquartered in New York, offers personal and commercial property and casualty (P&C) insurance through a network comprising over 680 independent insurance agents spread across the country. Their IT infrastructure runs on WINS, an AS/400-based COBOL packaged solution and GEN-A-RATE, a RS/6000-based premium calculation engine.

The Need:
  • Merchants Insurance noticed a significant increase in standard queries from agents concerning policies, claims and billing information. The increased traffic was eating into the productive time of employees. An automated method was required to handle the high volume of queries, without compromising on quality and accuracy.
  • To simplify the entire set of processes, and enable Agency Partners to conduct business with Merchants Insurance Group without hassles.

  • Merchants Insurance evaluated several solutions and narrowed down on Linc Software's LANSA based solution. The flexibility and versatility of LANSA as a development tool was the clincher.

    The Solution:
    Linc Software developed a Web-based solution with wireless access. It seamlessly integrated with Merchant Insurance's iSeries WINS Insurance solution. Developed on LANSA, the assignment demonstrated the industrial strength applications possible across environments, within short time frames. LANSA also provided web application extension to the existing AS/400 Insurance modules.

    The solution included Web-based claims, Policy, Billing inquiry and Commercial lines policy quoting components. The project was designed and developed at Linc's development center in Bangalore, coordinated by the Project Manager based onsite.

    The March of the iSeries
    This article is authored by Rajan Narayanan, Promoter Director at Linc Software. He brings to bear over two decades of experience on the IBM mid-range. In this piece, he traces the evolution of the AS/400 from its origins through its many avatars to what it is today

    140 runs per day!!!! Well, that's not the run rate of a cricket match, but the sales figures of iSeries (formerly AS/400) midrange servers since its inception in June 1988. That makes an impressive 750000 machines all over the world. The architecture has become the most popular one after the PC.

    The system's USP is that it is "built for business"; key aspects of this machine since its launch are:
    * Security (virus resistance)
    * Durability (reliable for 24x7 operations)
    * Manageability (low maintenance)
    * Scalability (an architecture that spans a wide spectrum).
