The newsletter from National HRD Network, Bangalore Chapter
Jan 2004             Vol 1  Issue 1

Dear [[-FullName-]],

This new year marks yet another major milestone for all of us at the Bangalore Chapter of the NHRD - the launch of our bi-monthly e-newsletter, HR Connect.

As we grow in number, the need to stay in regular touch assumes greater
significance. Towards this end, the NHRD team has done an excellent job to bring out this vehicle for our benefit. I would like to thank them for having come forward to lead this initiative.

New year is also a time for newer dreams, challenges and above all, a time for personal and professional renewal. Do come forward to use this medium of communication to express, learn and share from each other in a manner that will enhance value to all of us.

We have exciting times ahead. As some of you may be aware, the 9th NHRD Conference will be anchored by us, and is scheduled to be held between Sept. 16-19.

On this occasion, I would like to extend season's greetings to all of you and your family members.

Many thanks & regards,

R. Vidyasagar

IN THIS ISSUE

This issue of HR Connect attempts to address some thought provoking HR issues like Employee development, Performance assessment metrics, Management of interpersonal conflict and others. Well, this ezine is not a stiff discourse either, as Ranjan's wisecracks prove.

We need your feedback as a reader and industry observer. Inputs are invited - articles, letters, snippets, advertisements, including questions to Ranjan... anything that you feel is good enough to be shared within the NHRD community. Write to us at nhrd.bangalore@vsnl.net. We will be glad to hear from you.

Regards, Edit Team
LEARNING CULTURE

Assessing Human Capital

Many HR leaders say they are getting close to the "Holy Grail" of organizational measurement - Calculating with confidence the return on investment (ROI) of individual employees. They hope to determine who is generating how much profit per rupee of the company's investment in salary, benefits and training, and why to make the best use of their human capital.

Employee ROI is a developing and complex science, with a series of breakthroughs, each building on the past work of many pioneers and improving understanding of how organizations build value.

People development: The new mantra

As the slowdown fades away, the HR Manager's job has become tougher and demands new strategies. Today, the HR department plays a key role in the company's overall business strategy. The focus of HR today is to create an agile organisation which can innovate rapidly and exceed client expectations constantly, rather than just managing people.

Do HR professionals talk as diplomatically with their spouses like they do in the office?
- Kiran L S, Movinture Storage Networks

In some cases, it begins even before that. There is a story ( uncorroborated) of an HR Manager who would block any uncomfortable query in the office by saying, "Can I get back to you?" and never got back! Apparently, when he was getting married, he was asked by the Priest " Will you take this lady as your Bride?". To which, he replied, "Can I get back to you?".

A research by Gallup shows that people take their office home 7 times more than they take their home to the office. It is no suprprise if they take their profession also to their homes! What a diplomatic home it will be if both the spouses are in the HR profession !

WORK CULTURE

How to challenge the boss

Raising questions or challenging the CEO could be critical to success in HR and company's future. Questioning the one in charge, of course, can make one anxiety-ridden, particularly during turbulent economic times.

The natural reaction for many people whose decisions are questioned is defensiveness and resistance. So just how can a HR professional successfully challenge a CEO or other executive and convince that person to change his or her mind?

Making the ego match a draw..

Often managers are heard saying "He is such a good guy, sound technical knowledge, great experience.if only he could get along with people better!!!"

Interpersonal conflict in work place has emerged as a major issue for managers to tackle with. Conflicts drain people of energy and affects productivity-both long-term and short-term. One should learn to cope up with a work environment rife with potential conflicts. It is better to go prepared for the worst case scenario.

RETENTION TECHNIQUES

Best talents like to play good samaritan

A truly whacky method to hire and retain best talents for your company is to allow them to play the good Samaritan in the company time occasionally!!! People like to feel good about where they work and what they do. Involving employees directly in various philanthropic projects can be a real morale booster.

Titles in lieu of raises

It might be an old trick, but it still might work. If you really can't afford to give a raise to an employee, try giving him a better sounding title. Whether the strategy works depends on the individuals involved, but recruiters and pay consultants have drawn some broad conclusions.

QUOTE
"The intellectual equipment needed for the job of the future is an ability to define problems, quickly assimilate relevant data, conceptualize and reorganize the information, make deductive and inductive leaps with it, ask hard questions about it, discuss findings with colleagues, work collaboratively to find solutions and then convince others."
