Peddling Wares, literally!

Abandonware: A community of sites dedicated to preserving old and nearly forgotten console games, for nostalgia kicks.

Vaporware: A sarcastic term used to designate software and hardware products that have been announced and advertised but are not yet available.

Slideware: A much-hyped software product that currently exists only as a series of slides in a sales or marketing presentation.

Shovelware: Content from an existing medium (such as a newspaper or book) that has been dumped wholesale into another medium (such as a CD-ROM or the Web).

Bloatware: Software that provides minimal functionality while requiring a disproportionate amount of diskspace and memory.

TESTIMONIAL
Moi Finland!

Finland. It was a distant country, in geography and perception, till a decade ago. Then the Mobile phone came, and things haven't been the same since.

Recently, Yukthi Systems had the opportunity to work on its first project in Finland. This is what the delighted customer had to say:

"I've found an invaluable partner in Yukthi Systems on getting our Linux based server system up-to-date with the latest email software and other "hard-to-configure" services.

I've been able to rely on Yukthi as an extension to my organization, with good communications and true commitment rarely found on "smaller scale" IT-projects. I can warmly recommend their services"

Dear [[-FullName-]],

Welcome back.

Growth is good. Fast growth even better. But in this pursuit, CIOs tend to underestimate the silent engine of productivity - the software that drives their company. And when it does rear its head, the outcome can be expensive.

This issue of Yukthi Infoswitch attempts to address a few of the convoluted points involved - software licenses, asset management, and the open source alternatives.

As you may be aware, we have shifted our office to the more accessible part of Bangalore's business district - Richmond Road. Do note down our new phone numbers - 91 (80) 22483813 / 22486135. Drop in some time.

THE BIG PICTURE

Open Source: A Users Guide

For businesses used to strict licensing agreements that accompany proprietary software, the transition to open source can be confusing as well as liberating.

For companies moving to an open source environment such as Linux, where source code can be modified to fit the needs of a particular business, license language is often not as clear as it should be.

What is SAM?

In today's tightened economy, managing software as an asset rather than as an expense has become critical. IT asset management should not be perceived as either a software utility or an inventory practice, but as a business process linked to every key area of the business enterprise.

TIAA (There Is An Alternative) Factor for Microsoft.

If you're sick of the unreliability, the bloat, the insecurity, and the perpetual upgrading associated with Microsoft products you'll be happy to know that there are some excellent alternatives out there. The list below is meant as an introduction to Microsoft alternatives and as such it is by no means comprehensive. Full article by Timothy W Macinta

FOR THE CIO

The Future of Software - A Land Where Giants Rule

In 2010, CIOs will find themselves hostage to a few monopolistic vendors that keep software expensive and complex. It's not that CIOs are happier with the behemoths-in fact most of them hate the endless cycles of upgrades and complex maintenance and support agreements that the big vendors offer.

If open source takes hold in the big corporate infrastructure, enough momentum could build for an open-source integration technology, which can control the overall cost and complexity of IT. Full article by Chris Koch from CIO.

OPEN SOURCE - MYTHS

The Myths of Open Source

Open Source, once seen as flaky, cheap and the work of amateur developers, open source has emerged blinking into the daylight. With unrestricted access to the source code to run or modify at will, and support coming from an ad hoc collection of software developers and fellow users, the open-source model is very different from proprietary software.

Some of the other advantages are performance improvement, less breakdowns, absence of software licensing fees, reduced costs of "vendor churn," where vendors require users to migrate to a new version or pay for extra support and a good support system with multiple souces to solve the problem. DILEMMA

Why is it 'OK' to nick software

What's the difference between ripping software and shoplifting? None. Yet millions of us twist the arguments and kid ourselves we are not hardened criminals.

If you're computer-literate enough to be reading this, there's a strong chance you will know how to copy expensive design software from your friends, or download alien-shooting games from the net without paying. And if you know how to, then the chances are you've done it.

The likes of you and me wouldn't normally like to think of ourselves as thieves. We don't pocket CDs in HMV. Why are we happy to steal electronically? Full article by Stephen Tomkins from BBC.
