ANTIVIRUS

The Evolution of the Virus menace
The complexity of virus attacks have evolved over decades. In the late 80s and early 90s we had the boot-sector viruses. In mid 90s macro-based viruses propped up. Then we had Win32-based worms as main offenders. Today we have viruses like Nimda which have malicious code and can spread in multiple ways.

As the viruses have evolved so have the methodologies to manage them. Anti-virus software have moved from automating signature updates to heuristic-based scanning that looks at codes behavior. Companies are taking preventive actions like installing multiple Anti-virus softwares to firewalls. There is never a dull moment in virus management.

Dear [[-FullName-]],

Happy new year and a warm welcome to the second issue of Yukthi Infoswitch. Your reality-check on IT infrastructure investment and decision making.

Let me start with a revealing anecdote. Just recently, a top-tier home grown systems integrator Thought it could palm off an used router as a new one. They almost succeeded, till we caught them in the act. The client could not smell the fish either. It's shocking. We trust you havent been scammed on similar lines!

With that note of caution we shall delve into the educative mix of stories in this issue on the wisdom of Outsourcing, Open source, Security and others. All through Yukthi's smart lens of cost-effectiveness in technology deployment. Read on. If you have a point of view, write to me.
Regards - Ramakant Jawalkar

STRATEGIC OUTSOURCING

Why Outsource?
The biggest drivers of outsourcing historically were lowering costs and gaining efficiencies. Companies today are also looking for business impact such as improved quality and reduced time to market, in addition to bottom line results. From CIO

The pros and cons of outsourcing antivirus protection
The advantages of someone else handling e-mail filtering are similar to the advantages that come with outsourcing anything. The outsourcers can offer a depth of knowledge and efficiency that few individual companies have the resources to match. From Search Security

A case for Vendor neutrality
There are four main benefits to designing a network to be independent of any single equipment vendor. The relative importance of these benefits will change depending on your priorities. The benefits are:
  • Lower costs
  • Getting the best possible technology
  • Greater flexibility for future technology improvements
  • Less exposure to vendor instability.

    SECURITY BEAT

    Risk assessment essentials
We all claim to understand the importance of network security. We stand around water coolers chatting about this worm, that newly discovered security hole, this patch, and that hot fix. From ZDNet

    Making Security Pay
Security is typically seen as a "grudge spend," but management can't afford not to make security pay off. Companies need to identify what measures are required to protect their organizational assets and how to implement them. From Computer World

    OPEN THOUGHTS

    Penguins Take On Titans
Linux is suddenly gaining traction on Wall Street. Watch out, Sun and Microsoft. Big boys of the Wall Street like Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, and CSFB are switching from Unix to Linux in droves. From Fortune

    Linux security strong as ever
Security has been an issue both with the open source and proprietary operating system enthusiasts. The open communitys basic security philosophies is, "With enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow". This axiom points to the fact that since many people have the source code bug problem can be easily resolved. From ZDNet India

    RISKY BUSINESS

    The Dangers of Do-It-Yourself Security
Vulnerability scanners exist to tighten up your company's security. Essentially, these new software packages put hacking tools into a commercial wrapper so that administrators can use them. But what if one of the administrators turns out to be a bad guy? From IDG

Laptops: Is Your Network's Integrity Flying Out the Door?
With laptop theft now rising at astonishing rates, network managers need to assure rock solid security around these less than traditional endpoints..Otherwise, when a laptop gets snatched, corporate information and network integrity can fly out the door. From Networking Earthweb
